About this timer: 20-20-20 Rule for Remote Workers

Why do remote workers get more eye strain than office workers?

Remote workers tend to have longer uninterrupted screen sessions. In an office, you naturally break focus when someone walks by, you go to a meeting room, or you chat at the coffee machine. At home, you can sit in front of a screen for hours without moving. Add video calls (where you stare at faces on a screen) and the absence of ergonomic office setups, and the strain compounds fast.

When should I start the timer?

Start it when you begin your workday and let it run. It cycles automatically — 20 minutes of work, 20 seconds of eye rest. You can pause it during lunch or meetings where you're away from the screen. The session counter helps you see how many cycles you've completed.

What should I look at during the break?

Anything at least 20 feet (about 6 meters) away. If you're working from home, look out a window. If you don't have one nearby, look at the far wall of the longest room in your space. The goal is to relax the focusing muscles that lock up during close-range screen work.

Does this help with Zoom fatigue?

Partially. Zoom fatigue has multiple causes — sustained eye contact, seeing your own face, limited movement, and cognitive load from reading nonverbal cues on a small screen. The 20-20-20 rule addresses the eye strain component specifically. For full Zoom fatigue relief, also try turning off self-view and taking meetings audio-only when possible.
