About this timer: 20-20-20 Rule for Dry Eyes

Why does screen time cause dry eyes?

Your normal blink rate is about 15–20 times per minute. When focused on a screen, that rate can drop to 5–7 times per minute. Each blink spreads a thin film of tears across your eye. Fewer blinks means less tear coverage, which leads to dry, irritated, and uncomfortable eyes. Air conditioning, heating, and low humidity make it worse.

How does the 20-20-20 rule help with dry eyes specifically?

When you look away from your screen at a distant object, two things happen. First, your eyes naturally return to a higher blink rate because the concentration-induced stare is broken. Second, the shift in focus triggers a series of full blinks (not the partial, incomplete blinks common during screen use). These full blinks properly re-coat your eyes with tears.

Should I also use eye drops?

If your dry eyes are persistent, artificial tears (preservative-free) can help supplement your natural tear film. Use them before your eyes feel dry — once they're already uncomfortable, the damage is harder to reverse quickly. The 20-20-20 timer and eye drops work well together: the timer prevents drying from concentrated staring, and drops supplement moisture if you're in a dry environment.

What else causes dry eyes besides screens?

Dry indoor air from heating or air conditioning, contact lens wear, certain medications (antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants), aging, and autoimmune conditions can all contribute. If your dry eyes persist even with regular breaks and a humidified environment, see an eye care professional — it may be a medical issue beyond screen habits.
